How to Know You May Be Called to Be a Spiritual Director

Spiritual direction is a ministry of accompaniment—walking alongside others as they discern God’s presence and work in their lives. It’s not about giving advice or solving problems but about listening deeply and helping others recognize where God is leading. But how do you know if you might be called to this sacred work?

Signs of a Calling

1.   A Desire to Listen Well

Spiritual directors are first and foremost listeners. They create space for others to speak, reflect, and discover God’s voice. If you find joy in sitting with others in their questions, doubts, and longings, this may be a sign of calling.

2.   A Posture of Humility

Spiritual direction requires a willingness to set aside your own agenda. It’s not about giving answers but about helping others ask better questions. If you are drawn to this kind of relational ministry, it’s worth exploring further.

3.   A Growing Prayer Life

A spiritual director’s primary qualification is a deep relationship with God. This doesn’t mean perfection—it means a commitment to continually seeking God through prayer, reflection, and community. If you find yourself drawn to intercession and discernment, it may point toward this calling.

 Discerning the Next Step

If you sense a pull toward spiritual direction, consider these steps:

-   Pray About It  : Bring this sense of calling into your own prayer life. Ask God to reveal whether this is a ministry you are being invited into.

-   Seek Mentorship  : Talk with someone who is already serving as a spiritual director. Their insights and experiences can help clarify whether this is the right path for you.

-   Explore Training  : Many programs offer training in spiritual direction, equipping you with tools to listen well and discern alongside others.

A Ministry of Presence

Spiritual direction is a sacred and humble ministry. It requires a willingness to walk alongside others without judgment, trusting that God is already at work. If you feel a call to this work, know that it begins not with certainty but with a posture of listening—to God, to others, and to your own heart.
