Helping Others Learn to Pray

Teaching someone to pray can feel intimidating, but it’s one of the most important ways we can walk alongside others in their spiritual journey. Prayer is the foundation of a relationship with God, and learning to pray often requires a guide—a person willing to model, encourage, and nurture this practice.

Start With Simplicity

The best way to teach prayer is to demystify it. Many people hesitate to pray because they feel they don’t know the “right” words or format. Start by explaining that prayer is simply paying attention to God. It doesn’t have to be eloquent or lengthy—it just needs to be honest.

Introduce simple practices like breath prayers or conversational prayer. For instance, a breath prayer like, “God, you are near; I am loved,” can be repeated throughout the day. Conversational prayer, where someone speaks to God in their own words, encourages a natural and personal connection.

Model Vulnerability

When helping others learn to pray, be willing to model vulnerability. Share how prayer has shaped your own life, including moments when it felt challenging or dry. By being honest, you invite others to see prayer as a practice that evolves over time.

Pray together. This can be especially powerful in a discipling relationship or small group. Start by praying aloud, then invite others to participate when they feel ready. Over time, praying together fosters a sense of community and shared dependence on God.

Encourage Reflection

Help others reflect on their prayer journey by asking questions like:

- What has been meaningful in your prayer life recently?

- Are there ways you feel God is inviting you to grow through prayer?

- How can I support you as you continue to develop this practice?

Prayer isn’t something we perfect—it’s something we grow into. By walking with others in this process, we help them cultivate a lifelong habit of drawing near to God.
